Active Forms

Over the past few weeks we had our most current project going by the name of Active Forms (as the title would suggest). Being a very new and current topic of discussion, this is a good area to explore and delve into. Active Forms are  ‘tangible user interfaces (TUI) that couple action and reaction in a single modality’  which sounds daunting to start with, and it took us a few explanations to get our heads round the concept, however we prevailed through and came away with a successful product.

We got given a word to revolve our design and project around and ours was ‘value‘. This consisted of:

  • Rely on an interpretation and representation of aesthetic and experience to produce the active form.
  • Being concerned with the representation of the reality that surrounds us in your own individual way.
  • Produce artefacts of value (one of the main criteria will be mercantile value).
  • Innovate thanks to the techniques, style and genre used.

We chose to design our ideas and product around this new range of kitchen appliances by Panasonic because we liked the form and contemporary image they give off. They are sleek, modernistic and minimalistic designs which is what we were going for to meet our criterion word of ‘value‘.

Concepts and Development of other group members concepts

After choosing our domestic household room of the kitchen, we looked into routines and rituals undergone in that room and chose to use that of the Sink/Tap area. From there we went away to produce concepts and ideas revolving around the tap and washing hands. Here you can see the influence from our metaphor chosen of water running off a leaf as well as the whole product itself resembling a flower.

Hopefully from the above drawing you can see the 2 leaves on either side for both hot and cold dispenses. They both meet and flow off the spout in the middle.

With the posters we wanted to create an eye catching visual which incorporated not only our product but also the metaphor used and i think these both fit the criteria. They both incorporate bright colours to catch attention as well as the background and foreground complimenting each other well.
