Kinekt Gear Ring
Recently I have been working on a CAD model which can then be made using a Rapid Prototype Printer. The brief was basically to help demonstrate the power and usefulness of a Rapid Prototyper and so I chose to reproduce the well known Kinekt Gear Ring which has become very popular with middle aged, professional men.
As you may know I linked and blogged about this product back on 3rd November 2012 because I liked the design, and the mechanism intrigued me. Not to mention the fact I want one for myself!
So I produced a CAD model using Solidworks however I struggled with dimensions and fixing mechanisms as I couldn’t find any inclination on the internet of how it all worked and fit together. I then imported the model into Keyshot 4.0 and added materials and an environment scene to see some visual outcomes.
Here are some of the experiments I chose within Keyshot 4.0. Some of them include, 14 and 24 Carat Gold, anodized black metal, Silver and also black coloured glass in the top right. Glass is obviously not a suitable material and will not be used, however I liked the effect of the material because of its translucency and it allows you to see the inner workings of the gears.
These were my chosen materials and visuals. The ring and the individual gears are made from Silver, and the screws are made from 14 Carat gold which contrast well with the Silver shell. It adds subtle but expensive appeal, and in my opinion it looks nicer than the original version.
DISCLAIMER: I AM IN NO WAY AFFILIATED WITH KINEKT DESIGN AND THE GEAR RING IS NOT MY OWN DESIGN, IT IS THAT OF KINEKT DESIGN TEAM AND GLEN LIBERMAN HIMSELF.

I’m afraid these are only concept designs and for educational purposes. I do not own the design, Kinekt Design own it. You will have to get in touch with them to see if they would be interested in doing a one-off personalised design for you.
Sorry about that
